Eight months into a search they had been running from inside a job they described as toxic, they found a company that felt different. The mission matched. The portfolio piece did exactly what the company did. Every requirement checked out, and so did every nice-to-have, with evidence attached. For once, they were looking forward to presenting the take-home.

The rejection that followed was not the usual line. Every earlier rejection had been the same standard sentence, and every request for feedback had been ignored. This one was detailed. The recruiter wrote that a specific person on the team had liked them — twice — that they were “incredibly strong at representing myself,” that the mission aligned exactly, that they matched everything the company was looking for.

The other candidate, the email said, had more experience building a brand long-term. The other candidate had explained better how they would fill the gaps.

The recruiter encouraged them to apply again, told them to stay in touch, offered a call. They could not tell whether the detail made it better or worse. They are taking a break from the search. They wrote that they had been neglecting friendships, hobbies and their general happiness for a process that never ends.
