The call was scheduled for thirty minutes. It was meant to be an introduction — a conversation about the role and his experience.

It began with him explaining why he wanted the job. After that, the hiring manager did not ask about his experience so much as test him. There was no back-and-forth: a monotone okay, then the next question. Twice he was cut off mid-answer so the interviewer could ask a follow-up designed to catch him out.

Ten minutes in, he had had enough. He said he did not think it was going anywhere, thanked the interviewer for their time, and hung up while they were still speaking.

He had done five interviews the previous week. He had rehearsed the usual questions and had a strong answer ready. None of that was the issue. The interview was not a conversation, and he decided he would rather spend the remaining twenty minutes elsewhere.

He wrote that it was not going to be a fit, and that he was trying to save them both the trouble. It was, by his account, what it was.
