D. maintains the documentation site for a major frontend framework. He applied for a senior frontend role at a product company that uses the framework heavily.
The interview process ran five rounds. During the technical interview, two of the four panellists had his documentation site open in their browser tabs. He could see it through the screen share. They asked him questions about framework internals — questions he had written the documentation for.
He answered them all. The feedback after round five: "lacks depth in the fundamentals."
"I laughed for about thirty seconds," D. says. "Then I updated the docs to include a section on the thing they said I didn't understand."
