Phone interview — scheduled 11:00Call came at 10:59 — missed by 60 secondsCalled back, offered to rescheduleRejected — “bad impression”

His phone interview was set for 11:00. The hiring manager called at 10:59.

His phone’s spam filter delayed the ring — the call he had been waiting for looked, to his phone, like a nuisance. By the time he saw it, the line was dead. He called straight back; voicemail. He waited fifteen minutes in case the manager rang again. Nothing.

So he messaged the recruiter, explained what had happened, restated his interest, and offered to reschedule at the manager’s convenience. He had been ready and waiting for a call that came a minute early.

A few hours later the recruiter replied: the hiring manager had decided not to move forward. Missing the call “at the agreed time,” he said, had made a bad impression. They were ending the process rather than arranging another interview.

He posted about it and it collected more than a thousand upvotes. The part that stayed with readers was not the lost interview. It was that a single technical delay, on a call placed before the appointed hour, had been read as a character flaw.
