# The Wallpaper That Derailed the Interview

**[TRUE STORY]** — by Software candidate · via X

A candidate thought the interview was going well. A few technical questions in, the panel asked them to share their screen, so they did.

Whatever they had set as their desktop wallpaper landed badly enough to take over the conversation. The technical questions stopped mattering. The interview derailed, and the rejection arrived the same day as the post.

"I thought we were vibing," they wrote. Apparently not.

It is a small, specific reminder of how much of a hiring decision sits outside the candidate's control. You can rehearse the questions, the architecture, the story about your last conflict - and still be undone by a background image you forgot you had set.

The post was liked more than three hundred times, which suggests the feeling travels: prepare everything, and lose anyway.
