# The Interviewer Hadn’t Read the Resume — and Interviewed Him for the Wrong Job

**[TRUE STORY]** — by Candidate · via r/recruitinghell

An MBA student in their final year made it to the last round for a role they would have accepted without hesitation. It was in person, an hour and a half each way.

The interviewer opened without preamble. They had not read the résumé. “Who are you? Why are you here?” they asked. The candidate played it off, and the next fifteen minutes were ordinary enough.

Then it went sideways. The interviewer worked in private wealth. The candidate was interviewing for a corporate strategy role in a completely different department. For ten minutes the interviewer explained, at length, why the candidate was not a good fit — for private wealth, a job they had never applied for.

When the candidate finally pointed out the mix-up, the interviewer grew flustered and admitted they had been interviewing the wrong person entirely. The candidate had already sat two interviews for the actual role before this one.

A final round is supposed to be the point where everyone is clear on who is interviewing for what. This one began with the interviewer not knowing, and spent its middle explaining a job that did not exist.
