A recruiter reached out to a candidate about a software role marketed as "mostly remote" — two days per month in the office. The candidate lived four hours away; the arrangement worked. Six interview rounds and a five-hour take-home project later, the company revealed the role now required full relocation for four days a week in-office. A VP had called personally during the process to say they were very interested and that he was a top candidate. The candidate, recounting the experience on Reddit, called it "the most infuriating interview experience" of his career. The salary was not remotely close to what would justify moving his family.
