Then, this week: hired. He starts on the twenty-fifth of October. The paperwork is in. It is official. The job is not the best one he has ever had, but it pays well, and it is something.

He is forty-two. He has heard from people who have been unemployed for years, and he does not want to jinx it — he is, he wrote, literally knocking on wood.
