After nine months of searching, she accepted a verbal offer. What made it unusual was the recruiter. Every time they spoke he said some version of “you’re their favorite,” and the process moved quickly through each round.

She tuned it out. She had reached too many final rounds for roles she was overqualified for, then been rejected, to trust a recruiter’s encouragement.

After the final round, he called every day — the offer was being put together, here’s where it stands. Three days later it arrived. He had not been lying.
