# Laid Off on Day 89 — Then an Invoice for $6,200

**[TRUE STORY]** — by Candidate · via r/jobs

Five months ago he relocated across two states for a mid-level logistics role. The offer included a $4,000 relocation stipend, with what he called a standard agreement: repayable if he “voluntarily terminated” within twelve months.

On a Friday morning — one day before his ninety-day probation ended and his full medical benefits began — his director called a two-minute video meeting. The position, he was told, was eliminated due to “departmental downsizing,” effective immediately. No severance. No warning.

Then, that Monday, an invoice from the finance team arrived: $6,200. Not only the relocation money back, but a further $2,200 itemised for “internal software onboarding and operational training costs.” The letter warned that if he did not wire the balance within fourteen business days, they would forward the account to third-party collections and damage his credit.

They had fired him without cause, he wrote, and now expected him to pay them for the privilege of having worked there. He asked whether it was even enforceable — or whether they were simply preying on someone who was down.
