The listing said 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, maybe the odd weekend. On day one of training, management announced that from October the role meant mandatory twelve-hour shifts, six or seven days a week — then invited anyone with childcare, medical needs or a second job to speak up, promising to work with them. Several people did. By lunch the candidate had been walked out for being honest about her availability.
