# He Countered Within the Posted Range. They Rescinded the Offer.

**[TRUE STORY]** — by Candidate · via r/recruitinghell

Last week he got a verbal offer for a job advertised at $125,000 to $135,000. He currently earns more than the bottom of that range, and he had said in the interview that he could accept $125,000 only if there were incentives or a bonus attached.

Before sending anything in writing, HR asked whether he would take $125,000 with an unspecified bonus. So he countered: $135,000 — the top of the range they had published themselves.

Today, an email. They were rescinding the offer, they said, because they could not meet the salary he was asking for.

He had not asked for more than the posting allowed. He had asked for the ceiling. He wondered whether this was simply how the market worked now.
