# Pemberton & Cray — Pre-Contact Reference Attestation Standard (Non-Negotiable)

**[SATIRE]** — by The Satire Desk · inspired by a post in r/recruitinghell

PEMBERTON & CRAY — PRE-CONTACT REFERENCE ATTESTATION STANDARD
Applies to: all candidates, all roles, all conversations. Effective: before the first hello. Exceptions: none.

PURPOSE
To ensure that no candidate reaches a first conversation without having already supplied two professional references, in full, in advance, for a role that has not been described and a client who has not been named.

THE STANDARD
Two references are required at application. Not after a screening call. Not after an interview. Not after an offer. At application. A reference who has not been warned that they may be contacted is a reference who may speak freely, and a reference who speaks freely is a liability.

THE PROCESS
The references must not include a current employer, because a current employer might learn that the candidate is looking, which would be awkward for the current employer. They must instead be former managers who can confirm the candidate's performance without being told what the role is. Where a candidate declines to provide references before a first conversation, the profile is withdrawn. This is not a rejection. It is a protection of the references' time, which the candidate has already wasted by having boundaries.

THE CONVERSATION
Recruiters may explain that references will not be contacted “at this time.” They will simply be “ready.” When the candidate asks what “ready” means, recruiters may explain that it means ready. When the candidate asks why two names are needed to schedule a Teams call, recruiters may explain that it is for our records. Our records are comprehensive.

THE APPEAL
None. References provided after a first conversation are not accepted, because they were provided under duress — the duress of having had a conversation.

— Pemberton & Cray. We move candidates forward. Constantly. Toward the door.
