# Ashby & Rook — Head of Distributed Presence (Proof of Humanity Performed Live; Hand Must Cross the Face)

**[SATIRE]** — by The Satire Desk · inspired by a viral “deepfake candidate” hiring story

ASHBY & ROOK TALENT INTEGRITY GROUP
Remote. Verified remotely. Suspicion permanent.

THE CLIENT
A company that has not had a physical office since 2021 and does not intend to build one. It hires exclusively over video. It has therefore become impossible to establish that anyone exists.

THE PROBLEM
Interviews are conducted by webcam. Candidates are real. Interviewers are real. Neither party can prove it. The glint on a pair of glasses may be a reflection or a rendering. The pause before an answer may be thought or a buffer.

THE PROTOCOL
In September the client introduced the Live Human Proof Protocol, a six-step physical verification sequence performed on camera. Wave. Hold up three fingers. (Not four. Three.) Say your name backwards, then forwards, then stop. Put your hand in front of your face — the gesture popularised by a wrestler whose legal team has not been consulted. Hold it there for eight seconds while blinking twice. Remove the hand and confirm that you are still there.

THE FINDING
The protocol has been described internally as a complete success. In its first month it flagged eleven candidates. All eleven had held their hands beside their faces rather than in front of them. Ashby & Rook classifies this as a gesture-evasion pattern and treats it as an adverse finding. Compliance scores are recorded, retained for seven years, and never shown to the candidate.

THE ESCALATION
Candidates who pass the remote protocol are invited to a final round in person. The final round is conducted over video, because the office does not exist. A proctor attends in person and asks the candidate to confirm they are not being proctored.

THE SMALL PRINT
Candidates who object to the physical verification may request an accommodation. The request form requires a verified selfie. Ashby & Rook does not accept selfies.

HOW TO APPLY
Submit a résumé, a cover letter, and a twelve-second video in which you wave, blink twice, and state without prompting that you are not a language model. Strong candidates will be asked to repeat the video live, to confirm that the first one was not a language model.

— Ashby & Rook. We move candidates forward. Constantly. Toward the door.
